Bluegrassy

So it was recently our ward talent show and the Spare Tires had another chance to grace society with our unpolished and slightly out-of-tune bluesy licks. :)
Just gettin' warmed up:)

We decided to do "Man of Constant Sorrow," from O Brother, Where Art Thou?" (and yes, that's the crowd reaction we got, too;).
Mando.

Please check out beck's beard! (And of course, his and Phill's Manpris.:)

Beck on vocals, Chris and I on harmonies, guitar and mando. Steph on violin, Phil on banjo and Steve on drums. I looove me some bluegrass!

52 New Things: Saw the Lumineers at Saltair (18 to go)

We went to the Lumineers concert at Saltair!  Unfortunately, due to inclement weather, they had to stop the show about half way through the Lumineers set..:/  But we did get to hear two AWESOME opening bands, Nathaniel Ratliff and Dr. Dog. They played on the stage, but the Lumineers had to set up on the balcony for safety reasons.  At least we got to hear some of their stuff:)  They also played a new song for us, Falling.

52 New Things: Played a Cigar Box Guitar (21 to go)

Cigar box guitar!

We went to the Provo rooftop concert series, and there was a guy there selling his handmade cigar box guitars.  He had some that were signed by really famous people, (apparently...I didn't know any of them, which is not saying much;)

Also, I dig this whole outfit.  I like the blue turquoise earrings with this top.  And of course the $.99 headphones really pull it all together...

Lorde - Royals --Most Incredible Song

So this is my most recent song obsession.  I love everything about it.  The lyrics.  The harmonies.  The afro beat.  I love the solemn intensity.  The seriousness and commitment to not caring.  To the impossible.  The difference.  It's ennobling and empowering.  It is focused.

I've never seen a diamond in the fleshI cut my teeth on wedding rings in the moviesAnd I'm not proud of my addressIn the torn up town, no post code envy
But every song's like:Gold teethGrey GooseTripping in the bathroomBloodstainsBall gownsTrashing the hotel room
We don't care, we're driving Cadillacs in our dreams
But everybody's like:CrystalMaybachDiamonds on your timepieceJet planesIslandsTigers on a gold leash
We don't care, we're aren't caught up in your love affair
And we'll never be royals (royals)It don't run in our bloodThat kind of lux just ain't for us, we crave a different kind of buzzLet me be your ruler (ruler)You can call me queen beeAnd baby I'll rule, I'll rule, I'll rule, I'll ruleLet me live that fantasy
My friends and I we've cracked the codeWe count our dollars on the train to the partyAnd everyone who knows us knowsThat we're fine with this, we didn't come from moneyBut every song's like:Gold teethGrey Goose[ From: http://www.metrolyrics.com/royals-lyrics-lorde.html ]Tripping in the bathroomBloodstainsBall gownsTrashing the hotel roomWe don't care, we're driving Cadillacs in our dreams

ooh ooh oh oohWe're better than we've every dreamedAnd I'm in love with being queenooh ooh oh oohLife is great without a careWe aren't caught up in your love affairAnd we'll never be royals (royals)It's a word that I would love. That kind of lux just ain't for us, we crave a different kind of buzzLet me be your ruler (ruler)You can call me queen beeAnd baby I'll rule, I'll rule, I'll rule, I'll ruleLet me live that fantasy

52 New Things: The Spare Tires First Gig (31 to go)

I Will Wait by Mumford & Sons Cover

It was my bluegrass band's first gig!  It was pretty nerve wracking, because we aren't really a full blown band, we just like to get together and jam every Sunday.  We got this gig lined up though, and it was really fun.  It was pretty rocky, but for it being our first gig with no set up or dress rehearsal, I think it went decently:)  There are a million things I want to do differently, and we're already so excited for our next show!

The Spare Tires

Sooo, bluegrass:)  Some friends and I started playing around a couple of months ago.  We put together a few songs for our ward fireside and jam every Sunday night.

Now we have a couple of gigs lined up.  We're excited!

Yay!  Jamming outside on a Sunday night.

Me and Lee.  Now that Lee's taking off to Philmont, I'll be on mandolin duty.

Ryan playing his spoons from the hammock.  Like a boss.

We had a little audience:)

The Spare Tires. We have fun:)

52 New Things: Shredded a Pick (43 to go)

My shredded guitar pick :/

Soo, we were having a jam session.  It was really great!  I dropped my pick inside my guitar mid-song and just grabbed a new one, a little flimsy for how fast and loud we were playing.  When we were done, I tossed it on the counter and Keith started laughing and pointed out that I had totally demolished it (with my face-melting guitar solo....School of Rock. Just kidding. I'm not hard core enough for face-melting solos.) I had never done that before:0
